On December 18, 2023, the 14th anniversary of the registration of the Cognac Geographical Indication in China was successfully celebrated in Guangzhou. The event was organized by BNIC (the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac) which combined local terroir with lifestyle under the theme of the popular “City Walk” demonstrating the diversity of Cognac and allowing guests to experience the charm of Cognac in the iconic landmark buildings of Guangzhou.

The celebration kicked off with the  “Cognac Summit” cocktail, bringing together over forty media representatives and industry professionals. Led by the Cognac Educator Xu Wei, guests took part in a “City walk” through Guangzhou to discover the charm and diversity of Cognac through the town’s emblematic buildings.

During the event, Myriam Perrot, head of the Intellectual Property and Protection of the Cognac Appellation department and representing the BNIC, went online to give a welcome speech. “On behalf of the BNIC and Cognac professionals, I would like to thank you warmly for your sincere love and interest in our production and our beloved geographical indication. Each of you is a brilliant ambassador for Cognac, contributing to the richness and heritage of this exceptional spirit.”

Fourteen years earlier, on 18 December 2009, the former AQSIQ (Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) officially announced that Cognac was the first foreign Geographical Indication (GI) to be registered in China. Coincidentally, the iconic Guangzhou Tower was completed the same year along the Pearl River, perhaps marking the fortuitous link between Cognac and Guangzhou.
